‘It’s really sad’: Utahns react to craft giant Joann closing all its stores

SALT LAKE CITY — Annette Malen, a long-time customer of Joann, expressed her sadness over the closure of the fabric and craft retailer’s stores. Joann, which has been in operation for over 80 years, announced it is going out of business and will close all physical locations. This follows the company’s recent Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in January, citing weak consumer demand and inventory shortages. Initially, Joann intended to keep its stores open, but financial challenges led to the decision to wind down operations. The company’s assets are set to be acquired by financial services company GA Group and its term lenders. Joann’s 13 stores in Utah, including the Millcreek location, have seen an outpouring of customers since the announcement. Jaiden Robinson, another Joann patron, shared her disappointment but hopes another store might fill the void left by Joann’s closure. The company plans to keep its stores, website, and mobile app operational during the liquidation process, which is expected to take several weeks. Despite the rise of online shopping, many customers cherished the in-person experience Joann offered. — news from KSL.com
