KUWAIT, July 5 (KUNA) —

1931 — A 4.8-magnitude earthquake hit Kuwait. The tremor’s epicenter was located 33 kilometers beneath the surface at Boubyan Island.

1958 — Kuwait’s Amir, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, entered into a new offshore oil agreement with the Arabian Oil Co. Ltd. The deal allowed the company to explore, drill, and store oil within the concession area for a period of 44.5 years.

1961 — Kuwait’s Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah dispatched Finance Department Director Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah to several Arab nations to reaffirm Kuwait’s stance and counter accusations made by Iraqi leader Abdulkareem Qassem. Sheikh Jaber visited Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Morocco, and Lebanon.

1973 — Sheikh Yusuf bin Essa Al-Qinae, a prominent Kuwaiti historian and religious figure, passed away at the age of 90. He served as a judge in religious and personal affairs law. A respected intellectual, Sheikh Yusuf co-founded Mubarakiya School in 1931, Kuwait’s first formal educational institution, and served as its inaugural director. He also played a key role in establishing Ahmadiya School and Kuwait Municipality. He held membership in the Shura Council in 1921, the Legislative Council in 1938, and the Awqaf Council in 1949.

1993 — Kuwait’s Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah issued a decree appointing Dr. Fayza Al-Kharafi as the Rector of Kuwait University, making her the first woman in the Gulf region to hold such a position.

1997 — Kuwaiti MPs Sami Al-Munayyes, Meshari Al-Osaimi, and Ahmad Al-Mulaifi filed a motion to question Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Nasser Al-Roudhan over the misuse of public funds and legal irregularities. A subsequent vote of confidence failed to pass.

2001 — Kuwait and Iran signed a security cooperation agreement in Tehran aimed at combating drug trafficking, infiltration, and illegal fishing activities.

2018 — The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development finalized a KD-23.5-million (USD 80 million) loan agreement with Iraq to support the construction of schools.

2018 — Sabah Al-Otaibi, former forward for Al-Arabi Sporting Club and the Kuwait National football team, passed away at the age of 61.

2019 — The International Olympic Committee lifted a four-year suspension on Kuwaiti sports following the implementation of a reform roadmap agreed upon by all relevant parties.

2021 — Poet and intellectual Ali Hussein Al-Sabti passed away at the age of 85 after a distinguished career in cultural and literary fields.

2021 — Sheikh Ali Al-Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah passed away at the age of 78. He previously served as governor of Al-Jahra, Al-Asimah, Al-Ahmadi, and Mubarak Al-Kabeer governorates.
