Suriname’s National Assembly elected Dr. Jennifer Gerlindjes Simons as the country’s new president amid ongoing economic instability. The South American nation, which has a population of over 646,000, has been experiencing economic difficulties while preparing for an expected influx of wealth following the discovery of large offshore oil reserves, with initial production anticipated by 2028.
The election took place on Sunday, with Gerlindjes-Simons, a member of the National Democratic Party, running unopposed after her party formed a coalition aimed at removing the current president following inconclusive May elections. She will be inaugurated on July 16 as Suriname’s first female president.
“I am aware that the heavy task entrusted to me is made more difficult by the fact that I am the first woman to serve the country in this position,” she stated after her election victory.
The outgoing president, Chan Santokhi, completed a five-year term marked by corruption scandals and had previously called upon the International Monetary Fund to help stabilize Suriname’s economy.

Content: انتخبت الجمعية الوطنية ( (البرلمان) في سورينام اليوم الأحد الطبيبة جينيفر جيرلينجز سيمونز رئيسة للبلاد المضطربة لتصبح أول امرأة تتولى المنصب.
وتختار الجمعية الوطنية في الدولة الواقعة في أمريكا الجنوبية رئيس البلاد بأغلبية ثلثي الأصوات. وخاضت جيرلينجز -سيمونز، وهي عضو في الكونجرس، الانتخابات دون معارضة بعدما شكل حزبها ائتلافا يهدف إلى الإطاحة بالرئيس الحالي للبلاد بعد انتخابات أجريت في مايو ولم تسفر عن فائز واضح.
وجاء تشكيل الائتلاف في الوقت الذي تستعد فيه سورينام المتعثرة اقتصاديا لتدفق الثروة بعد اكتشاف رواسب كبيرة من النفط في البحر، وتوقع أول إنتاج بحلول عام 2028.
ومن المقرر أن يتم تنصيب جيرلينجز-سيمونز، التي تقود الحزب الديمقراطي الوطني، كرئيسة للبلاد الناطقة بالهولندية والتي يبلغ عدد سكانها أكثر من 646 ألف نسمة في 16 يوليو الجاري.
وقالت بعد الانتخابات “أنا أدرك أن المهمة الثقيلة التي توليتها تزداد صعوبة بسبب حقيقة أنني أول امرأة تخدم البلاد في هذا المنصب”.
يذكر أن فترة ولاية الرئيس تشاندريكابيرساد سانتوخي التي استمرت خمسة أعوام كانت مليئة بفضائح فساد، واضطر إلى دعوة صندوق النقد الدولي إلى إعادة اقتصاد سورينام إلى المسار الصحيح.
