EAA AirVenture Oshkosh Generates $257 Million Annual Economic Impact

The Experimental Aircraft Association’s annual AirVenture Oshkosh aviation event delivers $257 million in annual economic benefits to Wisconsin’s Fox Valley region, according to University of Wisconsin Oshkosh research analyzing 2024 event data. This aviation gathering attracted a record 686,000 attendees ahead of its 72nd edition launching July 21, demonstrating growing regional economic significance.

EAA CEO Jack J. Pelton emphasized the importance of updating economic impact assessments following substantial growth since the previous 2017 study. Independent analysis reveals extensive community benefits spanning hospitality, dining, staffing agencies, and retail sectors during this global aviation event.

Using consistent 2017 methodology, the UW Oshkosh study identified $171 million in direct spending across the five-county Fox Valley region (Winnebago, Fond du Lac, Outagamie, Calumet, and Brown counties). Additional economic ripple effects generated $86 million in secondary benefits. Within Oshkosh city limits alone, the event produced $117 million economic impact including $95 million in direct spending.

Dr. David Fuller from UW Oshkosh’s economics department, who led both 2017 and 2024 studies, highlighted significant ancillary benefits including $328,000 in additional property tax revenue for Oshkosh in 2024 beyond EAA’s regular property tax contributions. Additional revenue streams included lodging taxes, sales taxes, and other income sources.

The event’s economic significance stems largely from its international appeal, with over 70% of attendees traveling from outside Wisconsin. Visitors from 94 countries spent approximately $300 daily on average, with 35% allocated to accommodations (hotels, campgrounds, dormitories, and private rentals). Remaining expenditures supported local food services, entertainment, retail, and unexpected sectors including landscaping, event staffing, and logistics.
