U.S. immigration and tariff decisions are having significant effects not only beyond its borders but also within the country, particularly in regions like Arizona, according to Antonio Proto Elías.
The Economic Development Representative of Phoenix in Mexico noted that in cities like Phoenix, there is growing business concern due to labor shortages and uncertainty in planning long-term investments.
“Constant changes in public policies have made logistics and business strategy more difficult in the region. This becomes even more complicated when rules change with little advance notice, especially in commercial activities,” he explained.
Despite the uncertain outlook, Proto Elías emphasized the importance of Mexico as a strategic partner for Arizona due to its proximity and strong cultural and economic ties.
He pointed out that approximately 40% of the population in the state is of Hispanic origin, which facilitates mutual understanding and collaboration across various economic sectors, including technology and manufacturing.
“Phoenix continues to grow rapidly, driven by historic investments from companies like TSMC and Intel. However, we must remain vigilant about tariff fluctuations, as they could limit expansion potential, especially for Mexican suppliers seeking to integrate into U.S. supply chains,” he concluded.
