Today in Kuwait’s history

KUWAIT, Aug 18 (KUNA) — On this day in Kuwait’s history, several notable events have taken place over the decades. In 1952, Sultan Ibrahim Al-Klaib passed away at the age of 63. He had served in key civic roles, including membership in the “Al-Maaref” council and the municipal council, contributing to early administrative development in the country. In 1990, during the initial phase of Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, the Iraqi regime began assembling foreign nationals from allied countries near strategic sites in both Kuwait and Iraq, effectively using them as human shields. On the same year, the United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution demanding Iraq permit the safe departure of foreign nationals and refrain from endangering their lives. In 1992, Kuwait and France formalized a defense cooperation agreement in Paris, aimed at mutual support in the event of external threats. The year 1999 saw the founding of the Kuwait Health Insurance Company with a capital of KD five million, with the Public Institution for Social Security (PIFSS) holding 99.9 percent of its shares. In 2000, Kuwaiti artist Marzoug Al-Marzoug, a founding member of the Kuwait television troupe, died at the age of 54. In 2004, Kuwait Oil Company made a significant discovery in the Bahra Field: a Jurassic oil reservoir containing light crude with a 44-degree API gravity. Initial estimates placed production at 4,860 barrels per day and associated gas output at 670.12 million cubic feet daily. In 2007, the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) recorded a 4.3-magnitude earthquake in Al-Manageesh, located in southern Kuwait. A decade later, in 2016, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) and the Arab Petroleum Pipelines Company (SUMED) signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly assess potential oil-related initiatives. In 2020, life in Kuwait began to stabilize as authorities gradually lifted restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic. That same year, the National Assembly debated a parliamentary interpellation targeting Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anas Al-Saleh. The motion, introduced by MP Shuaib Al-Muwaizri, garnered support from ten lawmakers, but Al-Saleh retained his position after surviving the confidence vote. In 2021, sports journalist Hussein Al-Bloushi launched Kuwait’s first sports museum, housing thousands of memorabilia items from prominent football figures. Most recently, in 2024, the Dasman Diabetes Institute (DDI) announced that Dr. Fawaz Al-Zaid, a researcher and head of the Department of Bioenergy and Neurosciences, had been elected to the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) global council, marking the first time a Kuwaiti national has received this honor.
