LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer is warning that federal tariff policies are taking a toll on Michigan’s economy, driving up costs for families and businesses. n n“Michigan’s two largest and most critical industries, autos and agriculture, are hit the hardest,” Whitmer said during her Protect and Defend Michigan’s Economy address at the Capitol. “We’re already seeing rising costs because of the tariffs.” n nSmall businesses say they’re also feeling the pressure. Casey Sorrow, owner of Odd Nodd Art Supply in Lansing’s Old Town, said, “I’ve been selling art supplies for 20 years, and I’ve never seen anything like this year as far as price increases.” n nShipments are being delayed, vendors are pulling out, and costs are climbing week after week. “We’ve got vendors who will no longer ship to the U.S. because of tariffs and the uncertainty of whether it will actually arrive or be lost,” Sorrow added. n nBut Republican leaders argue Michigan’s challenges aren’t just about tariffs. They say high living costs, struggling schools, and a lack of competitiveness are driving families and jobs away. n n“I think the biggest problem is we have to start living within our means,” said Rep. Ann Bollin (R-49th House District). “Michigan was built and was the Industrial Revolution. We were the innovator of the world.” n nBollin added that lowering costs and strengthening education would help keep families in the state. “If we’re losing jobs in the state of Michigan, it’s because it costs way too much to live here.
