Essentia Health Drives Regional Economic Growth and Community Development in Twin Ports

Facing ongoing pressures in rural health care, Essentia Health has released findings from an independent economic impact analysis showcasing its substantial contributions to regional economies across Minnesota, North Dakota, and Wisconsin. As the largest employer in the Twin Ports region, the organization contributes more than $4.5 billion in economic output and sustains approximately 14,800 jobs, both directly and through indirect channels. System-wide, Essentia supports over 24,000 positions and generates $7.69 billion in annual economic activity.

Dr. David Herman, CEO of Essentia Health, emphasized the organization’s dual role in delivering medical services and strengthening local economies. “Each year, our dedicated teams care for over 600,000 individuals,” he noted. “Beyond clinical care, our collaborations with community stakeholders are fostering employment and reinforcing regional economic resilience. This study reflects not only financial metrics but also the collective effort of employees, patients, and partners investing in one another’s well-being.”

The assessment was conducted by Northspan, an economic development consulting firm, using industry-standard modeling tools. The analysis incorporated data on employment levels, revenue streams, operational expenditures, and charitable giving. One key finding revealed a multiplier effect: each full-time position at Essentia leads to an additional 0.94 jobs in the surrounding area, effectively amplifying its workforce impact.

Local economic stimulation extends through vendor relationships in construction, medical supplies, logistics, and equipment. By offering stable, family-supporting employment, Essentia also boosts consumer spending in housing, dining, recreation, and hospitality sectors.

Rachel Johnson, president and CEO of APEX, praised Essentia’s consistent engagement. “Their involvement in revitalizing Downtown Duluth and workforce development programs demonstrates long-term commitment,” she said. “This report illustrates how a locally rooted health system can lead during difficult times and why community support for such institutions is vital.”

Beyond economic contributions, Essentia addresses critical social determinants of health. In Duluth and Superior, it has partnered on initiatives targeting substance use disorders, food insecurity, and housing instability. Over the past five years, the organization has directed more than $8.8 million to 133 nonprofit groups in the Twin Ports area. In Superior, it played a central role in a county-led mental health campaign, engaging youth in awareness efforts and securing federal grants for prevention programs.

Tony Sertich, president and CEO of the Northland Foundation, highlighted collaborative efforts to expand child care access and support youth wellness. “Essentia’s investments are transforming lives across Northeast Minnesota,” he said. “This report affirms their broad influence on the entire Northland region.”

Jeff Corey, executive director of One Roof Community Housing, commended Essentia’s tangible actions toward affordable housing. “Many discuss the need for more affordable units, but Essentia is delivering solutions,” he stated. Through a joint project, 52 units have been completed in Duluth’s Hillside neighborhood, with another 72 units planned at Brae View Senior Apartments.

The study included Essentia facilities in Duluth, Superior, Moose Lake, Hermantown, Proctor, and Cloquet under the Duluth Metropolitan Statistical Area. In this zone alone, the organization directly employs 8,087 full-time staff and supports an additional 6,781 jobs indirectly.

System-wide, Essentia’s community benefit activities totaled $490 million annually, covering charity care, uncompensated services, workforce training, research, and discounts for uninsured patients. As a nonprofit provider, it ensures round-the-clock emergency care regardless of patients’ financial status. Nationally, hospitals delivered $22.5 billion in uncompensated care in 2021, underscoring the broader sector’s role in equitable access.

In 2024, Essentia allocated over $1.5 million to 153 local organizations focused on food security, housing stability, mental health, child care, and youth development.
