Economist Mohamed El-Behawshi stated that Egypt’s Cabinet Media Center recently reported a significant upturn in remittances from Egyptians living abroad, marking a record rise that has positively impacted the national economy and strengthened the country’s foreign exchange reserves.
In an interview on the program “From the Heart of Cairo,” El-Behawshi explained that for several years, these financial inflows faced persistent declines due to pressures on Egypt’s economic framework and foreign exchange market, including efforts to restrict the flow of overseas transfers. However, monetary reforms introduced by the Central Bank and the Monetary Policy Committee have played a crucial role in revitalizing remittance activity, notably through the elimination of the informal currency exchange market.
He noted that in 2025, remittances reached approximately $36.5 billion, a substantial increase compared to $22 billion in the previous year. This growth reflects improved macroeconomic indicators and renewed confidence among expatriate workers in formal financial channels.
El-Behawshi also highlighted that rising foreign direct investment has further supported economic resilience. Egypt’s diverse economic sectors—such as renewable energy and green hydrogen, information technology and telecommunications, agro-industry, and real estate development—have proven attractive to international investors. These sectors have collectively contributed to increasing the nation’s foreign currency reserves to $49.003 billion, despite ongoing global and regional economic challenges.
