Dr. Mohamed El-Johari, an economic expert and head of the Oxford Center for Economic Studies, attributed Egypt’s shortage of skilled labor despite available job opportunities to the rising popularity of both the tuk-tuk and TikTok. He explained that many young people are now opting for quick financial gains through operating tuk-tuks or seeking rapid fame on digital platforms, which has negatively impacted industrial apprenticeship and vocational training programs.
El-Johari emphasized that these two phenomena, while seemingly unrelated, are deeply interconnected in their adverse effects on Egypt’s socioeconomic development. The tuk-tuk represents an informal transport sector that draws youth away from technical careers, while TikTok promotes a culture of instant recognition over long-term skill building. Together, they divert young Egyptians from productive sectors such as manufacturing and agriculture.
He stressed that both trends encourage shortcuts that weaken the labor market and undermine efforts to build a robust, production-based economy. The informal tuk-tuk economy operates outside tax and social insurance systems, inflating the unofficial sector and contributing to a shortage of trained technicians. This, in turn, raises production costs and diminishes product quality.
El-Johari also highlighted that sustainable development begins with redirecting youth toward productive skills and hard work, rather than fleeting paths to fast income. He warned that glorifying unskilled earnings risks spreading a culture where economic value is detached from real expertise, replacing craftsmanship with low-value digital content.
To correct this trajectory, he underscored the importance of strengthening technical and vocational education—a priority already being pursued by the Egyptian government as part of its broader economic reform agenda. Additionally, he called for regulating tuk-tuk operations and integrating them into the formal economy, promoting educational content on digital platforms, and launching initiatives to revive traditional crafts and industries.

أرجع الدكتور محمد الجوهري، الخبير الاقتصادي ورئيس مركز أكسفورد للدراسات الاقتصادية، وجود نقص في العمالة الفنية بالبلاد رغم توافر فرص العمل إلى انتشار “التوك توك”، و”التيك توك”، موضحاً أن غالبية الشباب بات يبحث عن الشهرة السريعة عبر المنصة الرقمية والمكسب السريع من خلال شراء توك توك، وهو ما أثر بالسلب على مستقبل التلمذة الصناعية والحرف. n nالتوك توك والتيك توك وتأثيرهما على التنمية الاقتصادية والاجتماعية n nوأوضح الجوهرى، خلال تصريحات خاصة، أنه في السنوات الأخيرة، برزت في المجتمع المصري ظاهرتان تبدوان منفصلتين ظاهرياً، لكنهما ترتبطان ببعضهما ارتباطاً عميقاً من حيث التأثير على التنمية الاقتصادية والاجتماعية، وتابع:”التوك توك والتيك توك، الأول وسيلة نقل انتشرت بين الشباب بحثاً عن مكسب سريع، والثاني منصة رقمية للبحث عن الشهرة السريعة، وبينهما تتعرض مصر لخطر حقيقي يهدد الحرف والتلمذة الصناعية”. n nوشدد الجوهرى، على أن كلاهما يقدم طريقاً سريعاً يبعد الشباب عن الصناعة والزراعة والمهن الحرفية، مما يضعف سوق العمل ويؤثر سلباً على بناء اقتصاد قوي قائم على الإنتاج، وهو ما يجعل لهما تأثير مشترك يهدم الركن الأساسي للتنمية، وتابع:” التوك توك اقتصاد غير رسمي ينمو على حساب الاقتصاد الحقيقي ويوجه آلاف الصبية لقيادة التوك توك بدلاً من تعلم الحرف وهو ما يؤدى إلى تضخم الاقتصاد غير الرسمي أعمال دون تسجيل ضريبي أو تأميني ونقص فى العمالة الفنية مما يؤدي لارتفاع تكلفة الإنتاج وانخفاض الجودة”. n nولفت الخبير الاقتصادى إلى أن مستقبل التنمية يبدأ من إعادة توجيه الشباب إلى مهارات الإنتاج والعمل الجاد، بعيداً عن الطرق السريعة التي لا تصنع اقتصاداً ولا تنهض بأمة بل وتصدر نماذج غير إنتاجية للشباب وتعمل على انتشار مفهوم الكسب السريع دون مهارة واستبدال المهارة الحقيقية بمحتوى سريع بلا قيمة اقتصادية”. n nوأكد الجوهرى، أنه من أجل إعادة تصحيح المسار يجب تعزيز التعليم الفني والصناعي، وهو ما تعمل عليه الدولة بجد واجتهاد وهو من ضمن برنامج الإصلاح الاقتصادى الذى تعمل عليه الحكومة المصرية. n nوشدد “الجوهرى”، على ضرورة تنظيم عمل التوك توك ودمجه في المنظومة الرسمية، وتشجيع المحتوى التعليمي على المنصات الرقمية، وإطلاق مبادرات لإحياء الحرف والصناعات.
