Malaysia and Ethiopia have initiated a new phase of economic collaboration following the signing of multiple agreements during the first high-level economic cooperation forum held in Addis Ababa. The event, co-chaired by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie, marked a strategic shift aimed at enhancing bilateral trade, tourism, healthcare, aviation, and urban development.
A key outcome of the forum was the twinning of Addis Ababa and Kuala Lumpur, fostering municipal cooperation and knowledge exchange. Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasized that Ethiopia will serve as Malaysia’s gateway to Africa, while Malaysia will act as Ethiopia’s bridge to Asian markets.
Ahmed highlighted Ethiopia’s intent to leverage Malaysia’s expertise in industrialization and investment, noting that the agreements lay the foundation for economic advancement, workforce training, and youth employment opportunities. The partnership aims to transfer technical know-how and strengthen institutional capacity in Ethiopia.
Anwar Ibrahim affirmed Malaysia’s commitment to deepening ties with Ethiopia, describing the country as a strategic corridor to the African continent. He stated that Malaysia intends to expand its investments into Africa and explore new markets in Latin America, utilizing its diplomatic and economic networks to support African development.
Ibrahim also acknowledged Ethiopia’s historical significance in the Islamic world, referencing its role in hosting early Muslim migrations, which he said strengthens the moral and cultural dimensions of the partnership.
The forum concluded with a joint call to Malaysian and Ethiopian business leaders to use the event as a roadmap for innovation-driven, sustainable economic growth that delivers tangible benefits to both populations.
As part of his first official visit to Ethiopia, the Malaysian Prime Minister began a broader African tour that includes stops in South Africa and Kenya, underscoring Malaysia’s growing interest in South-South cooperation and global economic diversification.
