The United States officially took over the presidency of the G20 group of major economies on Monday for a 12-month term, succeeding South Africa. Washington stated its intention to prioritize driving economic growth and prosperity during its tenure.
In a statement, the U.S. Department of State outlined its key objectives, pledging to implement necessary reforms and refocus the G20 on its core mission of fostering economic expansion and shared prosperity to deliver concrete outcomes.
The administration emphasized three primary areas of focus: unlocking economic prosperity by reducing regulatory burdens, ensuring affordable and secure energy supply chains, and leading in emerging technologies and innovation.
Next year’s summit is scheduled to take place in Miami at a golf resort owned by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Last week, Trump stated he would not extend an invitation to South Africa.
Washington had previously boycotted the current year’s G20 summit hosted by Pretoria. It also accused South Africa of weaponizing its leadership of the bloc.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa rejected Trump’s threat on Sunday, asserting that his country remains a full, active, and constructive member of the G20. He dismissed Trump’s repeated claims that South Africa is committing “genocide” against Afrikaners—descendants of Dutch settlers—and seizing land from white citizens, calling such allegations a “blatant distortion.”
The U.S. boycotted the G20 leaders’ summit held on November 22 and 23, following widely discredited assertions by Trump that South Africa’s Black-majority government is persecuting the white minority.
On Wednesday, Trump claimed South Africa would not be invited to next year’s summit due to its alleged refusal to hand over the G20 presidency to a senior U.S. representative present at the closing ceremony. However, Pretoria maintains that it formally transferred the rotating presidency to an official from the U.S. embassy.
Trump’s plan to exclude South Africa has sparked divisions among G20 members. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told reporters he would attempt to persuade Trump to reverse his decision.

ومن المقرر أن تعقد قمة العام المقبل في ميامي، في منتجع جولف مملوك للرئيس الأميركي دونالد ترمب، الذي قال، الأسبوع الماضي، إنه “لن يوجه دعوة إلى جنوب إفريقيا”.
وقاطعت واشنطن اجتماع العام الجاري الذي استضافته بريتوريا، كما اتهمت جنوب إفريقيا باستغلال قيادتها للمجموعة كسلاح.
تهديد ترمب
ورفض رئيس جنوب إفريقيا سيريل رامابوسا، الأحد، تهديد ترمب، قائلاً إن “بلاده تظل عضواً كاملاً ونشطاً وبناءً في مجموعة العشرين، رافضاً مزاعم ترمب المتكررة بأن جنوب إفريقيا ترتكب “إبادة جماعية ضد الأفريقان”، وهم أحفاد المستوطنين الهولنديين، وتصادر الأراضي من المواطنين البيض، ووصفها بأنها “تضليل صارخ”.
وقاطعت واشنطن قمة قادة مجموعة العشرين خلال العام الجاري، التي جرت في يومي 22 و23 نوفمبر توجيه من ترمب، بعد مزاعمه المتكررة، التي تفتقد المصداقية على نطاق واسع، بأن حكومة جنوب إفريقيا ذات الأغلبية السوداء تمارس الاضطهاد ضد الأقلية من البيض.
وقال ترمب، الأربعاء، إن جنوب إفريقيا “لن تتم دعوتها إلى القمة العام المقبل؛ بسبب رفضها تسليم رئاسة مجموعة العشرين إلى ممثل كبير من سفارتها كان حاضراً في حفل الختام. لكن بريتوريا تقول إنها “سلمت الرئاسة الدورية لمجموعة العشرين إلى مسؤول في السفارة الأميركية”.
وأثارت خطط ترمب لاستبعاد جنوب إفريقيا انقساماً بين أعضاء مجموعة العشرين، إذ قال المستشار الألماني فريدريش ميرتس للصحافيين إنه “سيحاول إقناع ترمب بالتراجع عن قراره”.
