Economist Hany Tawfik has issued a warning over the precarious state of the global economy, noting that international debt has reached $150 trillion—significantly surpassing the world’s total gross output of approximately $119 trillion. This imbalance, he stressed, signals an impending economic crisis unless decisive measures are taken to curb further debt accumulation.
Speaking during an interview with media personality Osama Kamal on the show “Masaa DMC” aired on DMC Channel, Tawfik highlighted that rapid advancements in artificial intelligence will intensify existing challenges. These include major shifts in labor markets, the displacement of traditional jobs, and a global restructuring of production systems.
He emphasized that investment and employment are foundational to building a resilient economy. No nation, he pointed out, operates in complete self-sufficiency; all rely on imports to varying degrees.
Tawfik called for prioritizing investment, production, and export activities within Egypt’s economic agenda. He argued that interest rates are less critical in attracting investment compared to policy stability and administrative efficiency.
The economist also underscored the need to broaden the tax base and hold tax evaders accountable. He believes that improved tax collection from non-compliant individuals could significantly reduce the state budget deficit. He urged stricter enforcement mechanisms to combat tax evasion and ensure sustainable revenue streams that strengthen the government’s ability to respond to evolving economic conditions and maintain national economic stability.
