Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly attended the launch ceremony for the African Trade Center, affiliated with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital. The event was attended by Hassan Abdullah, George Elombi, Benedict Oramah, Khaled Abbas, along with board members, ambassadors, and business leaders.
Afreximbank, a multilateral financial institution, supports African nations in enhancing intra-continental trade, fostering innovation, and integrating the continent into the global economy. The new center, the first of its kind in North Africa, aims to expand trade and investment opportunities and solidify Egypt’s role as a key driver of Africa’s commercial future, marking a milestone in the continent’s trade transformation.
Madbouly highlighted the deep partnership between Egypt and Afreximbank, rooted in mutual trust and a shared vision for comprehensive economic development across Africa. He noted that hosting the bank’s headquarters enhances collaboration by establishing a dynamic platform for trade information, capacity building, innovation, and inter-African dialogue.
He emphasized that continental integration is vital for Africa’s future prosperity and global standing. A unified African market can boost intra-African trade and investment, achieve economies of scale, support industrialization, and develop regional value chains, reducing reliance on raw material exports.
Such integration also strengthens Africa’s negotiating power internationally, attracts foreign direct investment, and helps address shared challenges like poverty reduction, youth employment, and cross-border infrastructure in transport and energy. The Prime Minister described it as essential for sustainable and inclusive growth and for securing Africa’s influential role in the global economy.
He added that strengthening African economic alliances supports Egypt’s sustainable development goals by opening vast markets for Egyptian exports, diversifying foreign currency sources, and enhancing trade through agreements like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Africa also offers significant investment opportunities for Egyptian firms in construction, energy, and telecommunications. Continental financial institutions play a crucial role in funding large-scale projects. These partnerships reinforce Egypt’s position as a bridge connecting Africa, the Middle East, and Europe and support cross-border cooperation, including regional energy security through interconnected power grids.
Madbouly noted Afreximbank’s role as a key financial partner for Egypt, supporting national priorities during challenging global periods such as economic reforms, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Russia-Ukraine crisis. Collaboration includes facilitating Egyptian companies’ participation in engineering, procurement, and construction projects across Africa and financing industrial ventures in sugar, petrochemicals, tires, and steel.
The bank also funds energy initiatives, including oil trading and storage, regional interconnection projects, and infrastructure development in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. It has contributed to health security by supplying millions of vaccine doses through an African epidemic response initiative and partnered with Egypt on a continental program to boost agricultural production, food processing, and trade, reinforcing Egypt’s role in supplying fertilizers and essential goods.
The African Trade Center will host specialized platforms for trade data and market monitoring, training, research, and innovation spaces, and serve as a primary venue for major trade and investment events across Africa, aligning with AfCFTA objectives.
Madbouly concluded that the center’s location in the New Capital enhances Egypt’s status as a continental gateway for investment, trade, and diplomacy, complementing its role as host of Afreximbank’s headquarters and as a founding and key supporter of the AfCFTA implementation.
