Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly stated that laying the foundation stone for the African Trade Center (AATC), operated by Afreximbank in the new administrative capital, marks a milestone in the strategic partnership between Egypt and the bank—one rooted in mutual trust and a shared ambition to advance development and economic growth across Africa.
He explained that Egypt’s hosting of the African Trade Center highlights its central role in promoting continental economic integration and facilitating intra-African trade. The center will function as an integrated platform for exchanging trade data, enhancing institutional capabilities, encouraging innovation, and connecting African markets—contributing to sustainable economic expansion and greater global visibility for the continent.
Madbouly emphasized that deeper regional integration aims to establish a unified African market capable of boosting cross-border investment and commerce, leveraging economies of scale, promoting industrialization, and building regional value chains. This shift allows African nations to reduce dependence on exporting raw materials, improve international competitiveness and negotiation strength, attract more foreign direct investment, and address common challenges such as poverty alleviation, youth job creation, and upgrading critical infrastructure in transport and energy.
He affirmed that economic partnerships with African countries are a strategic priority for Egypt, offering avenues to expand exports, diversify foreign exchange sources, and enhance trade under the African Continental Free Trade Agreement. These ties also open promising investment opportunities for Egyptian firms in key sectors like construction, energy, and telecommunications, backed by close coordination with continental financial institutions to fund large-scale projects.
Such collaborations help solidify Egypt’s status as a strategic gateway linking Africa with the Middle East and Europe, strengthening cooperation on cross-border issues, particularly energy security via regional interconnection networks. He stressed that reinforcing economic ties with African partners is essential for achieving long-term, sustainable growth for Egypt’s economy and fostering continental solidarity.
Madbouly highlighted Afreximbank’s significant role as a primary financial partner for Egypt, supporting national priorities across sectors during periods of global crisis—including economic reform programs, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the fallout from the Russia-Ukraine war. The partnership has facilitated Egyptian companies executing engineering, procurement, and construction projects in over 15 African countries and provided substantial financing for industrial ventures in sugar, petrochemicals, tires, and steel. Additionally, the bank has supported the energy sector through funding for oil trading, storage facilities, and strategic infrastructure, including developments in the Suez Canal Economic Zone and pipeline interconnection projects.
He noted that the bank also contributed to Egypt’s health security by supplying 26 million vaccine doses through the continental ADAT initiative and supported agriculture, food processing, and trade programs, reinforcing Egypt’s role as a leading supplier of fertilizers and essential goods.
The African Trade Center will include specialized platforms for trade research and data analytics, innovation and training zones, and serve as a central venue for hosting major trade and investment forums across the continent—aligned with the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.
Madbouly concluded that selecting the new administrative capital as the center’s headquarters enhances Egypt’s standing as a continental hub for trade, investment, and economic diplomacy. This decision complements Egypt’s founding membership in Afreximbank and its strong support for implementing the continental free trade agreement, reflecting the Egyptian government’s firm commitment to advancing African economic integration.
