On the sidelines of the Russia-Africa ministerial conference, Egyptian Foreign Minister Dr. Badr Abdelatty met with Franciska Tatchoupe Bilou, the African Union Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry, and Minerals.
Abdelatty congratulated the commissioner on her recent appointment and emphasized the central role of the commission in advancing continental economic policies and fostering regional integration. He expressed Egypt’s interest in strengthening coordination with the African Union on economic and financial matters, particularly in supporting young entrepreneurs, empowering youth, and promoting sustainable economic initiatives across the continent in collaboration with African institutions and financial bodies.
The foreign minister highlighted the importance of enhancing continental financing tools and investments in key sectors. He cited the recent laying of the foundation stone for the African Export-Import Bank and the African Trade Center in Egypt’s new administrative capital as practical examples of deepening economic integration, boosting trade and investment, and connecting African regions. These projects, he noted, position Egypt as a major gateway for investment and commerce in Africa and as a bridge linking the continent to global markets. The African Trade Center will provide comprehensive infrastructure to support the private sector, demonstrating Egypt’s and other African nations’ ability to implement their economic visions.
Abdelatty praised ongoing efforts to finalize a unified African document on debt, describing it as a vital instrument for strengthening the continent’s collective stance in global financial discussions, ensuring sustainable funding, and improving resilience against external economic shocks. He stated that the document will serve as a reference point for coordinating negotiations with creditors and international financial institutions and for presenting a unified African position in global forums, particularly the G20, thereby supporting global financial reform and promoting fairness and transparency in debt management.
He stressed the need for continuous coordination to align positions in major international forums, especially the G20, and to reinforce a unified continental stance that reflects Africa’s development and economic priorities. Abdelatty emphasized building on outcomes from previous G20 summits to advance economic and financial cooperation across the continent, aligning with continental strategies such as Agenda 2063. This approach, he said, contributes to inclusive and sustainable development, supports global financial reform, and promotes investment in infrastructure and workforce development. He also underscored the value of developing trilateral partnerships and joint economic initiatives to enhance industrial and commercial integration and to support investment in critical industries, tourism, and efficient resource and mineral management.
The minister concluded by expressing Egypt’s readiness to deepen cooperation with the African Union in tourism, drawing on its extensive experience in cultural, eco-, and medical tourism. He highlighted the upcoming opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum as a key driver for attracting tourism investments and enriching the continent’s cultural experience. This collaboration aims to develop joint programs for sustainable tourism, build youth capacity in the sector, and expand investment in tourism infrastructure across Africa, linking culture with economic growth and maximizing the developmental returns of African tourism investments.
