Jeff Bezos’ Washington Post moves might please Trump — but they’re costing him money

Jeff Bezos’ recent changes at The Washington Post have reportedly resulted in a loss of 75,000 subscribers in just a few days. This follows a larger loss last fall when Bezos decided the paper would stop making presidential endorsements. Bezos’ decisions seem aimed at gaining favor with Donald Trump but are proving costly. When the non-endorsement plan was announced last fall, hundreds of thousands of subscribers canceled within two weeks. Despite gaining 400,000 new subscribers in between announcements, the Post still faces a net loss of a couple hundred thousand subscribers. Bezos’ directive that op-ed pages only publish content supporting “personal liberties and free markets” could alienate left-leaning readers without necessarily attracting right-leaning ones. Critics suggest Bezos is trying to please Trump, noting that similar actions by other media figures have garnered Trump’s respect. However, this strategy may not be effective for Bezos, who remains one of the world’s richest individuals. — news from Business Insider
