Southwest Airlines Alters Bag Policy: Drawing Parallels with Luka Doncic Trade

Southwest Airlines has sparked controversy with its decision to modify its longstanding “bags fly free” policy, drawing comparisons to the Dallas Mavericks’ trade of Luka Doncic. In a recent Instagram post, Southwest Airlines humorously remarked, “It’s not like we traded Luka…” attempting to ease customer concerns.

The airline, headquartered in Dallas, eliminated its “bags fly free” policy, which has been a staple since its inception over 50 years ago. Currently, passengers enjoy two complimentary checked bags, but starting May 28, this privilege will be exclusive to members of the upper tier of Southwest’s loyalty program, Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members, and those flying on Business Select fares. Regular A-List members and others will receive one free bag.

This change comes amid a series of adjustments by Southwest, including the introduction of an international partner and the transition from open seating to assigned seating. The rapid succession of these changes has drawn mixed reactions from passengers and investors alike.

The comparison to the Mavericks’ trade of Doncic, described by Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb as a move that “killed the city,” highlights the emotional response to both decisions. Doncic was traded for Anthony Davis in early February, with varying outcomes for both teams.
