GM to use Nvidia AI chips, software to automate vehicles, factories

General Motors will utilize artificial intelligence chips and software from Nvidia to develop autonomous vehicle technology for its cars and enhance factory workflows. Traditional automakers have faced challenges commercializing autonomous technology, which has proven more complex and costly than anticipated. GM and Nvidia plan to collaborate on building AI systems using Nvidia’s platforms to train AI manufacturing models for factory planning. GM also intends to incorporate Nvidia’s autonomous technology into future advanced driver-assistance systems. Financial terms were not disclosed, but GM will purchase chips from Nvidia for driver-assistance technology. This partnership comes amid competition from Tesla, which uses proprietary technology for its Full Self-Driving system. GM forecasts that its Super Cruise driver-assistance technology will generate approximately $2 billion in annual revenue within five years. Other companies partnering with Nvidia for advanced driver-assistance systems include BYD, Mercedes-Benz, and Rivian. GM has previously used Nvidia’s platforms for AI model training, including simulation and validation.
