Tesla recalls 46,000 Cybertrucks due to potential safety hazard

Tesla is recalling over 46,000 Cybertrucks because of a cosmetic exterior trim panel that could detach from the vehicle, potentially becoming a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash. The recall pertains to the cant rail part and affects all Cybertrucks manufactured between November 2023 and February 2025, as stated in Tesla’s filing to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) dated March 18.
Owners of affected vehicles can visit Tesla’s service department for a free replacement of the cant rail. Tesla’s value has dropped by approximately 40% year-to-date as CEO Elon Musk serves as a top advisor to President Donald Trump and leads the administration’s job-slashing team known as the Department of Government Efficiency.
Protests against Tesla and Musk have followed some of his political actions and roles within the Trump administration. The angular unpainted steel design of the Cybertruck has made it a target for those opposing Musk. Owners have reported issues ranging from rude gestures to vandalism.
Tesla faces growing competition in the battery electric vehicle market and deals with tariff uncertainties after Trump imposed tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico, and mainland China.
Tesla has not disclosed sales figures by model, but the recalled vehicles represent a significant portion of Cybertrucks on the road. Since deliveries began in November 2023, the Cybertruck has faced manufacturing and quality challenges, with nine recalls noted on the NHTSA website.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The NHTSA stated that Tesla initiated the recall after discussions with the agency, noting that no crashes, injuries, or fatalities have been reported related to this issue.
