President Donald Trump has increased threats against individuals who destroy Tesla vehicles. On social media, Trump contemplated sending such individuals to a prison in El Salvador, where over 200 Venezuelan migrants accused of gang ties were recently sent.
Trump also stated that people vandalizing or destroying Tesla vehicles, made by the company of his ally Elon Musk, could face long jail sentences. “I look forward to watching the sick terrorist thugs get 20-year jail sentences for what they are doing to Elon Musk and Tesla,” Trump posted on social media. “Perhaps they could serve them in the prisons of El Salvador, which have become so recently famous for such lovely conditions!”
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that at least three suspects accused of destroying Tesla property with Molotov cocktails have been charged in federal court and could face up to 20 years in prison.
Tesla’s stock value has dropped in recent months, and authorities have arrested individuals who allegedly torched Tesla vehicles in protests against Musk’s role in the Trump administration. Trump continues to support Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Trump held a Tesla car show at the White House to boost the company’s sales. Bondi has warned potential vandals, calling the crimes domestic terrorism and promising severe consequences.
The statements underline the Trump administration’s support for Musk, a major political donor, as critics argue he holds too much power. Bondi stated, “The swarm of violent attacks on Tesla property is nothing short of domestic terrorism.” She emphasized ongoing investigations imposing severe consequences on those involved in these attacks.
Domestic terrorism is broadly defined by law enforcement as crimes aimed at pushing political, religious, or social goals in America. Attorney General Bondi issued a second statement citing charges in cases where suspects allegedly damaged Tesla vehicles and charging stations.
One suspect in Colorado was arrested for spray painting “Nazi” on a Tesla sign. The suspects were charged with arson or attempted arson of property involved in interstate commerce, carrying prison sentences of five to 20 years.
Bondi warned, “The days of committing crimes without consequence have ended. Let this be a warning: if you join this wave of domestic terrorism against Tesla properties, the Department of Justice will put you behind bars.” — news from The Washington Post
