Two American college students were detained in Denmark during their spring break, according to the attorney representing one of the student’s families. Owen Ray, a 19-year-old from the University of Miami in Ohio, and an unnamed friend were held at Copenhagen Airport on April 1 following an alleged disagreement with an Uber driver the previous night. Jordan Finfer, the U.S.-based attorney for Ray’s family, explained that the students realized they had entered the wrong address in the Uber app. The driver reportedly refused to take them elsewhere, leading to all parties exiting the vehicle. An altercation reportedly ensued, during which Ray claimed the driver kicked him in the groin. In response, Ray allegedly pushed the driver, causing him to fall. Both students fled the scene afterward. The next day, they were detained at the airport as local police considered them “flight risks.” Uber stated that user safety is a top priority and any violence allegations are taken seriously. Danish police confirmed the students remain in custody but have not been formally charged. The U.S. State Department acknowledged the situation and noted that embassy staff in Copenhagen are providing consular assistance. Privacy considerations prevent further comment.
