Nvidia CEO Visits Beijing Amid US Restrictions on Chip Sales to China

Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, made an unexpected visit to Beijing following new US restrictions on chip sales to China. The trip, reportedly invited by a trade organization, saw Huang meet with Ren Hongbin, head of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade. Huang expressed his desire to continue cooperation with China. This visit comes after the US imposed fresh restrictions on Nvidia’s H20 datacentre GPUs, designed specifically to comply with previous restrictions. The US government cited concerns about the use of these products in Chinese supercomputers. These new controls are expected to cost Nvidia approximately $5.5 billion in earnings. Huang also met with DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng to discuss alternative chip designs that wouldn’t violate US bans. The US House of Representatives’ China committee has questioned Nvidia about potential export-controlled chips used by DeepSeek. Despite challenges, Huang emphasized Nvidia’s commitment to advancing AI globally while adhering to legal compliance.
