US Federal Trade Commission sues Uber over subscription practices

The US Federal Trade Commission has initiated a lawsuit against Uber, accusing the company of deceptive practices regarding its subscription service, Uber One. The FTC claims that Uber charged customers for this service without obtaining their consent and made it difficult for users to cancel subscriptions.
The complaint highlights that consumers faced up to 23 screens and had to take as many as 32 actions to cancel their subscriptions. However, Uber disputes these allegations, stating that cancellations can now be done within the app in 20 seconds or less.
Uber One, launched in 2021, offers perks such as no-fee delivery and discounts on rides and orders for $9.99 per month or $96 annually. The FTC also alleges that some consumers were enrolled in Uber One without their consent.
This lawsuit marks the FTC’s first legal action against a major US tech company since President Donald Trump’s second term began in January. The FTC’s case against Meta, which was initiated during the first Trump administration, is currently in its second week of trial.
