China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), the world’s largest producer of electric vehicle batteries, has introduced an advanced battery with a longer range than BYD’s latest technology. Both companies now claim their batteries can charge EVs in as little as five minutes. CATL announced its Shenxing battery offers a range of 320 miles, surpassing BYD’s 250-mile range. Tesla’s Superchargers, by comparison, provide 200 miles of range in a 15-minute charge. CATL’s Chief Technology Officer, Gao Huan, stated at the company’s Tech Day in Shanghai that they aim to set a new standard for EV batteries. The Shenxing battery, with a full capacity of 500 miles, was launched alongside a sodium-ion battery called Naxtra, which is more affordable and safer than lithium-based alternatives. CATL supplies batteries to brands like Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen, and Ford, holding a 38% global market share in 2024. The company plans to expand its global presence through a secondary listing in Hong Kong. The Shenxing battery performs well in cold weather, delivering an 80% charge in 15 minutes at temperatures as low as -10 degrees Celsius. Naxtra batteries, expected to enter mass production by year-end, offer a range of up to 310 miles. CATL claims tariffs imposed by the US on China would minimally affect its business due to its limited American shipments. — new from CNN
