In 2024, U.S. spirit exports hit a record high of $2.4 billion, largely driven by concerns over tariffs and ongoing global trade disputes. According to the American Spirits Exports report from the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States, exports surged due to the removal of retaliatory tariffs by the UK and EU between 2018-2021. However, uncertainty persists due to unresolved trade disputes affecting growth. Exports to the EU increased by 39%, partly due to fears of a potential 50% tariff on American whiskey imports in 2025. Despite this, exports to other regions declined by nearly 10%. Key states contributing significantly to exports include Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas, Florida, and Indiana. While American whiskey exports accounted for 54% of total spirits exports, they dipped slightly to $1.3 billion. DISCUS President Chris Swonger emphasized that exports thrive in countries where tariffs have been eliminated.
