Harrods Latest Retailer Targeted by Cyber Attack

Luxury department store Harrods has confirmed it is the latest retailer to be targeted by a cyber attack. The company stated that it had restricted internet access at its locations following an attempt to gain unauthorized access to its systems. This incident follows the Co-op’s decision to shut down parts of its IT systems to fend off a hack, while Marks & Spencer continues to deal with a cyber attack that has cost it millions in lost sales. Harrods reassured customers that its flagship store remains open and that online sales continue as usual. A statement from Harrods emphasized that customers are not being asked to change their behavior at this point. Although it is unclear if the three incidents are connected, it is believed that M&S was attacked with ransomware, a type of malicious software used to encrypt important data unless a ransom is paid. Security experts have linked the attack on M&S to a group called “DragonForce.” Harrods has not disclosed further details about the nature of the attack it faced. — new from BBC
