The New York Times Gains 250,000 Digital Subscribers in Recent Quarter

The New York Times Company announced that it acquired 250,000 digital-only subscribers during the last quarter. Additionally, digital subscription revenue increased by over 14 percent during this period. These results contributed to a 21.9 percent rise in adjusted operating profit compared to the previous year, reaching $92.7 million for the quarter. Total revenue climbed 7.1 percent to $636 million. The Times had 11.66 million total subscribers at the end of the first quarter, including 600,000 print subscribers. The company aims to reach 15 million subscribers by the end of 2027. Meredith Kopit Levien, president and CEO of The Times Company, has focused on diversifying revenue streams through lifestyle products bundled with news coverage. Nearly half of the subscribers now have multiple subscriptions, including core news, Cooking, Games, Wirecutter, and The Athletic. Average revenue per user increased to $9.54, up 3.6 percent. Digital advertising revenue rose to $70.9 million, marking a 12.4 percent increase from the same quarter last year. Quarterly operating costs were $577.3 million, up 5.8 percent from the previous year. The Athletic, purchased by The Times in 2022, reported an adjusted operating profit of $2.9 million, up from a loss of $8.7 million in the same quarter in 2024.
