NJ Transit May Face Strike, Threatening Train Services

NJ Transit train engineers are considering a strike on May 16 due to disputes over pay. If the strike occurs, it could halt all rail services, affecting hundreds of thousands of daily commuters. Engineers seek annual salaries closer to $190,000, which NJ Transit claims would require a 34% fare increase or a 37% rise in corporate transit taxes. NJ Transit has proposed increasing average salaries to $170,000 by 2029. In the event of a strike, commuters are advised to use alternative transportation such as buses and park-and-ride shuttles, though these options will only cover about 20% of current rail ridership.
