China Criticizes US Tariff Increase on Steel and Aluminum Imports

On June 5, 2025, China’s Ministry of Commerce (Mofcom) expressed strong criticism over the US decision to raise Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50 percent. Spokesperson He Yongqian described the move as “self-harming and harmful to others,” emphasizing its potential to disrupt global supply chains. Several countries have opposed the tariff hike, and Mofcom urged the US to abandon zero-sum thinking and avoid misusing national security concerns. Instead, the ministry called for collaborative efforts to uphold a rules-based multilateral trading system through equal dialogue.
