Costa Rica Leads Latin America in Gender Equality Rankings

Costa Rica ranks as the top Latin American country in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Gender Gap Report, securing 16th place globally. Nicaragua, traditionally a regional leader, dropped 12 positions to 18th globally. Chile, Mexico, Ecuador, and Argentina follow Costa Rica in the rankings, while El Salvador, Guatemala, and Paraguay remain in the lower half. Globally, Iceland leads with the smallest gender gap at 92.6%, followed by Finland and Norway. Latin America and the Caribbean rank third globally, with a gender gap closed by 74.5%. The region has made significant progress since the index began in 2006, reducing its gap by 8.6 percentage points. Nicaragua and Mexico excel in political empowerment, achieving gender parity in parliament, while Panama leads in economic opportunities.
