KUWAIT, June 17 (KUNA) — In 1961, Amir Sheikh Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah appointed Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Al-Salem Al-Sabah as the head of police and general security. In 1970, 16 members of Kuwait’s Al-Yarmouk Brigade died as martyrs while fighting alongside Egyptian forces during the Sinai Canal Battle. In 1976, a bomb explosion at the offices of the daily newspaper Al-Anbaa injured five people. In 1979, Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah issued a decree transferring some private sector shares to the State. In 1986, four explosions occurred in the Al-Ahmadi oil zone, causing massive fires, with a group called “the Arab rebels” claiming responsibility. In 1990, the celebrated poet and composer of the National Anthem, Ahmad Meshari Al-Adwani, passed away at the age of 65. In 2000, a gas leak at Al-Shuaiba refinery resulted in the deaths of two Kuwaiti engineers, Mohammad Al-Kandari and Badr Al-Dyoli, and injured several others. In 2001, Dr. Fayza Al-Kharafi, the rector of Kuwait University, was awarded an honorary PhD by the American University in Cairo. In 2013, Kuwaiti shooter Abdullah Al-Taraqi Al-Rashidi won a gold medal at an international shooting tournament in Cyprus. In 2019, shooter Iman Al-Shammaa claimed a gold medal at the Amir International Shooting Cup Tournament in Italy. Also in 2019, Kuwait launched the Salwa Sabah Al-Ahmad Center for Stem Cells, the first of its kind in the Gulf region. In 2020, the National Assembly approved measures to delay installments for the Defaulters Fund and support families amid the coronavirus pandemic. The same year, amendments were passed on certain penal laws, civil and commercial litigation procedures, and commercial advertisements, along with the digitization of permits for individuals and companies. In 2020, Ahmad Yusuf Behbehani, the former deputy chairman of the Kuwait News Agency, passed away at 79. In 2021, the Cabinet imposed travel restrictions on citizens unless they received two doses of the coronavirus vaccine. Later that year, non-Kuwaitis were allowed entry into the country provided they were vaccinated, effective August 1.
