Hassan Abdullah, Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt and board member of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), commended the institution’s pivotal contributions to advancing economic development across Africa. Speaking on the bank’s strategic alignment with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, he emphasized its growing role as a key partner in fostering financial and trade integration while improving the competitiveness of African economies.
Abdullah highlighted Afreximbank’s leadership in launching transformative initiatives, including the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) and the Adaptation Fund for the African Continental Free Trade Area. He also noted the bank’s support for industrial zones and specialized medical centers, which enhance the economic and health infrastructure of member states.
He recalled the institution’s critical role during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it mobilized financial resources to safeguard economic stability across the continent, demonstrating the resilience and problem-solving capacity of African-led institutions.
Abdullah expressed gratitude to Professor Benedict Oramah for his inspirational leadership over recent years and extended best wishes for his future endeavors. He welcomed incoming president Dr. George Elombi, expressing confidence in his ability to build on the bank’s achievements.
In closing, he called on shareholders and partners to continue supporting the new leadership and strengthening the bank’s role as a major driver of sustainable development in Africa. Egypt, he affirmed, will remain a strategic partner and a central hub for Afreximbank’s future success.
