The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has warned in its latest report that the global economy is facing a critical moment that threatens the foundations of the global financial system amid escalating trade tensions and geopolitical disruptions.
Agustín Carstens, the general manager of the bank, often referred to as the “central bank for central banks,” stated that the trade war led by the United States, along with rapid political shifts, has begun to undermine the decades-old framework of a stable international economic system.
He added that the global economy is undergoing a “pivotal transformation,” entering a new era marked by uncertainty and unpredictability, which erodes public trust in major institutions, including central banks.
This warning comes at a sensitive time, just days before the deadline set by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose new tariffs on July 9, and about six months after geopolitical tensions escalated in various regions around the world.
When asked about Trump’s controversial remarks toward U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, whom he described as “foolish,” Carstens adopted a diplomatic approach, simply stating that “frictions are expected at times,” an implicit reference to the tense economic relations between the United States and China.
