WORCESTER — City Manager Eric D. Batista’s self-evaluation, which is set to be discussed at the City Council meeting on Tuesday, June 24, highlights Worcester’s economic growth and safety initiatives. Appointed in December 2022, Batista recently secured a new three-year contract, increasing his annual salary beyond $300,000.
In his evaluation, Batista emphasized the city’s economic progress, noting that Worcester has awarded $1 million to small businesses, resulting in $3.7 million in private investments over the past 18 months. The city has also seen job growth and aims to build 12,000 new housing units by 2033 to accommodate its expanding population.
On the safety front, Batista pointed out that Worcester is recognized as one of the safest midsized cities in the country. Recent initiatives include the seizure of 90 guns by the Police Department and assistance for 276 individuals accessing detox services. Additionally, the citywide speed limit has been reduced to 25 mph, with 60 speed humps installed to enhance road safety.
Despite these achievements, Batista stressed the importance of looking ahead, stating, “While we reflect on our shared accomplishments, it’s crucial to focus on strengthening core services for our rapidly growing urban center.” The meeting will be the City Council’s last until July 15.
