Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary General of the Synod of Bishops, emphasized the role of a synodal Church in addressing contemporary social challenges during a lecture at the Pontifical Institute of Higher Moral Theology (Alfonsiana Academy) on June 6. He highlighted that the Church must engage with issues like technological progress, economic development, and global conflicts as a united community walking together. Grech stressed that a synodal Church fosters communion, participation, and mission, as outlined in the Final Document of the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, approved by Pope Francis in October 2024. He also noted the importance of the Jubilee of Hope and the 60th anniversary of Gaudium et spes, which reinforce the Church’s commitment to humanity, especially the suffering. The cardinal underscored that the Church’s synodality offers guidance for economic development centered on human dignity, promoting justice, solidarity, and peace. He concluded by urging humility and patient listening to foster reconciliation and integral human development.
