Delta CEO says flight crew on Toronto plane that crashed was experienced

Delta’s CEO, Ed Bastian, stated in an interview with “CBS Mornings” that the crew of the Endeavor Air subsidiary involved in Monday’s crash in Toronto was experienced with wintry conditions. The incident resulted in 21 injuries, and Bastian described the video of the event as “horrifying” while commending the flight crew’s swift evacuation. He emphasized that continuous training prepared them for such scenarios. Delta confirmed that only one of the injured remains hospitalized, with all expected to survive. Two runways at Toronto’s Pearson Airport remain closed due to the wreckage. Investigators have retrieved the black boxes for analysis, and parts of the CRJ900 aircraft separated upon impact, causing a fire. Despite recent incidents, Bastian reiterated that air travel is the safest mode of transportation. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada noted it’s too early to determine the cause of the crash. The airport faced high winds and cold temperatures following a snowstorm. A separate video of the descent suggested the landing lacked the typical “flare” maneuver. Separately, Bastian mentioned speaking with Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and expressed no concern over FAA layoffs, citing non-critical safety roles. He also noted the Trump administration’s focus on hiring air traffic controllers and enhancing technology. — news from Reuters
