Egypt Unveils New Statistical Portal and Sixth Economic Census Under World Statistics Day

Under the patronage of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, Egypt marked World Statistics Day 2025 with the official release of results from its sixth economic census (2022–2023) and the launch of a modernized digital platform for the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). The event, held on Monday, brought together senior officials including Dr. Rania El-Mashat, Minister of Planning and Economic Development, alongside representatives from international organizations, emphasizing the role of high-quality data in evidence-based policymaking and national development.

The celebration, themed “High-Quality Statistics and Data for All,” underscored Egypt’s progress in strengthening its statistical infrastructure. Lieutenant General Khairy Barakat, head of CAPMAS, stated that investing in statistical systems is equivalent to investing in the nation’s future. He emphasized that enhanced data collection and analysis empower decision-makers to design policies aligned with citizens’ needs and support Egypt’s Vision 2030 agenda.

Barakat highlighted ongoing efforts to upgrade both human and technological capacities within the agency, expand collaboration with national and international partners, and advance digital transformation. The sixth economic census, conducted every five years in line with international standards, offers a comprehensive snapshot of the national economy. For the first time, it fully covered industrial, investment, and free zones, issuing dedicated reports for each. It also included non-agricultural self-employed workers and establishments in new urban communities.

New economic activities such as e-commerce, outsourcing services, and green economy initiatives were integrated into the census framework, reflecting structural changes in Egypt’s economic composition. These data have directly informed major national programs, including the “Decent Life” initiative targeting improved living standards for around 60 million rural Egyptians, and the National Family Development Program aimed at enhancing quality of life and managing population growth.

The launch of CAPMAS’s new website marks a significant digital leap. Designed with a contemporary visual identity inspired by the pyramids—symbolizing knowledge and endurance—the platform leverages advanced digital technologies to offer interactive dashboards, intuitive search tools, and real-time access to official statistics. Rigorous content governance mechanisms ensure data accuracy and timeliness, reinforcing trust in national data systems.

Dr. Rania El-Mashat affirmed that reliable statistics are foundational to strategic planning and efficient resource allocation. She praised CAPMAS for its leadership in promoting data literacy and building a robust national database that captures both formal and informal economic activities. The census results provide a detailed map of employment, production, and geographic distribution, supporting efforts to formalize the informal economy and direct investments toward priority sectors.

The event also featured the unveiling of a commemorative postage stamp, recognition of distinguished statistical professionals, and awareness campaigns via the new portal. A closing press conference summarized key findings and outcomes.

Barakat expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister, the Minister of Planning, and UN Resident Representative Elena Panova for their sustained support. With this milestone, CAPMAS reaffirms its commitment to advancing Egypt’s position in global statistical systems and supporting inclusive, data-driven development.
