This strategy, he noted, is expected to reduce the national import bill, facilitate the transfer of expertise and technology into Egypt, and strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities.
El-Shafei highlighted Egypt’s competitive advantage as a key entry point to the African continent, pointing out that African nations collectively import over $1.2 trillion annually, with China alone capturing more than $500 billion—over 40% of the total. Establishing industrial and logistics zones, particularly around the Suez Canal corridor, would allow Chinese and international companies to manufacture in Egypt and export efficiently to African and European markets at lower costs while avoiding numerous customs duties.
He stressed that infrastructure remains a cornerstone for investment attraction and noted that BRICS countries collectively represent over 25% of global GDP, with China currently regarded as the world’s leading economic powerhouse and largest manufacturing base. El-Shafei revealed Egypt’s ambitious vision to leverage partnerships with China and the world’s largest economic bloc to localize future industries such as electric vehicles and achieve a leap in logistics and storage. He also underscored efforts to challenge dollar dominance.
According to El-Shafei, adopting local currency transactions and hosting Chinese industrial operations could resolve Egypt’s chronic trade deficit and contribute to reshaping the global economic landscape beyond dollar reliance. He also disclosed plans for a major agricultural alliance with China to address global food security challenges and expressed a long-term goal of positioning the Suez Canal Economic Zone among the world’s top seven economic regions.
