The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) held a press conference today, Monday, to unveil the findings of Egypt’s sixth economic census, coinciding with World Statistics Day, celebrated globally every five years under the theme “Leading Change with High-Quality Data and Statistics for All.”
This year’s event underscores the critical role of accurate data in shaping public policy and supporting decision-making at both national and international levels, particularly amid rapid global economic transformations.
The conference was held under the patronage of Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister, and Dr. Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation, with attendance from several ministers, senior officials, and representatives of international and regional organizations, alongside leading experts in statistics and economics.
CAPMAS described the event as a national platform for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and discussion on how statistical data supports sustainable development. The broad participation reflects Egypt’s commitment to strengthening its data infrastructure as a tool for inclusive economic growth.
During the event, the agency launched the revamped version of its official website, following a multi-year comprehensive upgrade aimed at offering new interactive services that make it easier for journalists, researchers, and investors to access reliable statistical information.
The new platform features advanced data visualization tools and modern presentation technologies, aligning with Egypt’s broader digital transformation strategy and the integration of technology into national statistical services.
A key highlight of the conference was the official release of the sixth economic census results, which serve as the most comprehensive national source of economic data. The census provides a detailed overview of the structure and characteristics of Egypt’s economic activities, their geographical distribution across governorates, and reveals key new indicators such as:
– The number of active economic establishments across sectors.
– Average employment levels and annual wages.
– Volume of invested capital and categories of paid capital.
– Total value of expenditures and required goods and services.
– Proportions of registered versus unregistered businesses in the formal economy.
– Distribution of economic activities by governorate and legal entity type.
The economic census is a comprehensive effort to document all operating economic establishments in the country—whether in the public, private, or informal sectors—using the latest international standards. Its goal is to establish an accurate and integrated database that enables policymakers to analyze the national economy, prioritize investment areas, and study the evolution of production and service sectors, supporting Egypt’s Vision 2030 for sustainable development.
Egypt began conducting economic censuses in 1991/1992 on a regular basis, and the 2025 sixth census continues CAPMAS’s efforts to update economic data and monitor structural changes in the economy.
The conference also introduced new indicators on the size of Egypt’s informal economy, a central issue in economic development. CAPMAS presented data on the number of unregistered businesses, their contribution to GDP, and the scale of informal employment. These insights will assist the government in integrating the informal sector into the formal economy through incentive-based tax and legislative policies.
The agency emphasized that these indicators will serve as a foundation for a deeper understanding of Egypt’s economic structure and guide investments toward high-value-added sectors, contributing to the goal of doubling Egypt’s exports to USD 100 billion annually.
