EU Deal Avoids Severe Trade Fallout

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed approval of the trade agreement reached between the United States and the European Union, which includes a 15% tariff on EU imports.

“I view the achievement of an agreement favorably,” Meloni said to reporters in Addis Ababa, where she is attending the United Nations Food Systems Summit.

“I have always believed, and still believe, that an escalation in trade tensions between Europe and the U.S. could have led to unforeseen and possibly catastrophic outcomes,” she continued, emphasizing that she has not yet fully reviewed the specifics of the deal. “We will need to analyze the agreement’s details. Further work remains because the agreement signed yesterday is preliminary and not legally binding.

“There is still more to negotiate. For instance, we must clarify potential exemptions, especially for certain agricultural goods.

“There are several aspects that remain unclear, and I don’t yet have a full understanding of what is meant by investments, gas purchases, and similar points.

“I won’t be able to fully evaluate this until I have concrete information.”
