Memorial Day Travel Could Break a Long-Standing Record

As the unofficial start of summer approaches, a significant number of Americans are expected to travel during Memorial Day weekend, potentially breaking a two-decade-old record. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA), approximately 45.1 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home between Thursday, May 22, and Friday, May 26. This represents an increase of 1.4 million travelers compared to 2024 and surpasses the previous record of 44 million travelers in 2005.
Despite concerns over rising prices, many Americans plan to use the long weekend to spend time with loved ones, even if their trips are closer to home. The majority of travelers—87%—will opt for road travel, while 8% will fly, and nearly 5% will travel by train, bus, or cruise. Popular domestic destinations include Orlando, Seattle, and New York City, while internationally, Rome, Vancouver, and Paris top the list. For those driving, AAA provides tips on the best and worst times to hit the road.
