Mongolia and New Zealand Strengthen Ties Amid 50th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations

On September 2, the Mongolian government announced that Prime Minister Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai met with New Zealand’s Speaker of Parliament, Gerry Brownlee, during the latter’s official visit to Ulaanbaatar. The meeting coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Mongolia and New Zealand, a milestone welcomed by both sides. The Prime Minister highlighted the steady expansion of bilateral cooperation across various domains in recent years, emphasizing the importance of deepening collaboration in economic development, agriculture, and climate resilience. He stressed that increasing two-way trade, learning from New Zealand’s expertise in cooperative enterprises, and enhancing people-to-people exchanges are vital for strengthening the partnership.

Additionally, the Mongolian leader commended the recent memorandum of understanding signed between Mongolia’s Ministry of Food, Agriculture, and Light Industry and the nonprofit organization “Share Mongolia.” This initiative has successfully introduced modern sheep-shearing techniques from New Zealand, significantly improving herders’ livelihoods. The training programs and outreach activities launched under this project were acknowledged as valuable contributions to rural communities.

Speaker Brownlee affirmed that the relationship between the two nations has been built on mutual political trust and shared democratic values over nearly five decades. He noted ongoing progress in social, economic, and agricultural cooperation and reaffirmed New Zealand’s commitment to broadening these collaborative efforts in the future.
