New Jersey Governor’s Economic Mission to India Yields Nearly 400 Job Commitments

NEW DELHI — Choose New Jersey, the state’s primary nonprofit dedicated to attracting business investment, has concluded its second governor-led economic mission to India. Spanning six days and four cities from September 19 to 24, the delegation visited New Delhi, Kochi, Bengaluru, and Mumbai. Led by Governor Phil Murphy and First Lady Tammy Murphy, the group included officials, business leaders, and academic representatives from New Jersey. The trip emphasized strengthening economic, educational, and cultural connections with India, resulting in commitments for nearly 400 new jobs within the state.

“It’s a privilege to return to India and witness the tangible progress since my 2019 visit—the first by a sitting New Jersey governor,” said Governor Murphy. “We’ve established a solid framework for collaboration, and Indian enterprises have become vital contributors to our economic development. We aim to expand this alliance and generate more shared opportunities.”

The 2019 mission laid the groundwork for sustained investment, with recent milestones such as Biocon’s newly opened facility highlighted during the visit. In 2024, Governor Murphy established the New Jersey-India Commission to further deepen cooperation and foster innovation across sectors.

“India consistently ranks among New Jersey’s top sources of foreign direct investment, and this mission reaffirmed the strength of that relationship,” stated Wesley Mathews, President and CEO of Choose New Jersey. “We engaged with hundreds of Indian business and government leaders, securing expansion plans in technology, life sciences, and retail that will bring close to 400 new positions to the state. I’m grateful to our sponsors and partners who made this possible. With the highest per capita Indian-American population in the nation, New Jersey offers both a favorable business climate and an inclusive environment where Indian businesses and families can succeed.”

In 2023, bilateral trade between New Jersey and India reached $11.3 billion. Since Governor Murphy assumed office in 2018, Indian investments have contributed to nearly 3,000 jobs in the state. Key expansions announced or reinforced during the mission include:
