The Preston County Economic Development Authority (PCEDA) has acquired the former Spirit Energy property in Hazelton, West Virginia, with plans to redevelop it for industrial use. The 41.8-acre site, previously occupied by TAZ Sawmill and later purchased by Spirit Energy during the pandemic, includes a 15,000-square-foot building and is seen as well-suited for light to medium manufacturing following infrastructure upgrades. n nRobbie Baylor, Executive Director of PCEDA, highlighted the location’s strategic advantages: proximity to the interstate, flat terrain, and existing site preparation. However, he noted that essential utilities such as sewer and natural gas are currently absent and must be installed. n nThe acquisition was made possible through the Abandoned Mine Lands Economic Revitalization (AMLER) program, administered by the state Department of Environmental Protection. Nearly $4 million in funding will support both the purchase and necessary improvements. n nBaylor emphasized the goal of attracting businesses that offer quality employment—positions with competitive wages and benefits. Strong highway access is expected to lower logistics costs and improve connectivity to suppliers, markets, and regional labor pools. n nInterest in the site has already emerged, with PCEA in discussions with multiple companies. Work is ongoing to extend public utilities, including sewer capacity and natural gas lines, to the property. Once completed, the site will serve as a hub for job creation in the county. n n“This grant allows us to upgrade infrastructure that isn’t currently available,” Baylor explained, referring to the sewer and gas systems. “With these enhancements, the location will be fully equipped to support new employers and workforce growth.”
