SpaceX and Tesla Lobby U.S. Trade Representative on Tariff Policies

Billionaire Elon Musk’s companies, SpaceX and Tesla, have submitted letters to the U.S. trade representative concerning tariff policies from the Trump administration. These submissions occur as Musk is working to reduce federal government spending and employee numbers, following requests from President Donald Trump.
Additionally, these letters are sent as President Trump enforces significant tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada, with China and Canada responding through retaliatory tariffs. In an unsigned letter to U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Tesla highlighted these retaliatory tariffs as a threat to its financial performance.
Tesla urged Greer “to consider the downstream impacts of certain proposed actions taken to address unfair trade practices.” The letter further stated, “While Tesla recognizes and supports the importance of fair trade, the assessment undertaken by USTR of potential actions to rectify unfair trade should also take into account exports from the United States.”
“U.S. exporters are inherently exposed to disproportionate impacts when other countries respond to U.S. trade actions,” the letter added.
