Safeway and Albertsons workers in four Colorado cities, including Estes Park and Fountain, are set to begin a strike Sunday after nine months of unsuccessful negotiations. The labor dispute involves demands for improved staffing, livable wages, and protection of health and pension benefits. Unlike the February strike involving King Soopers workers, this strike will start on a limited scale to allow the public and the companies time to understand the workers’ concerns. The strike could expand to include stores in metro Denver and other cities if an agreement is not reached. This marks the first time Safeway workers in the state have voted to strike over unfair labor practices since 1996.
