The economic impact of the FedEx St. Jude Championship
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – We are just a couple weeks away from the greatest golfers in the world descending upon the 901 for the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and while they will be gunning for the trophy, the tournament being in Memphis is teeing up big business for the bluff city.
The tournament gets 5.6 billion impressions online, 24.7 million hours view on TV, it is a gold mine for Memphis Tourism President and CEO Kevin Kane.
“You know shots of downtown Memphis, aerials of the city, parks, Beale Street, the river, the impressions like you said are incredible,” Kane said.
The broadcast has a global reach, showcasing Memphis as a world-class destination. That exposure is priceless when it comes to attracting future businesses and talent.
It has made it to where over 50% of the ticket sales are to people outside the Memphis market.
“You are bringing visitors here from not only around the country but all over the world,” Kane said.
Kane said it could not come at a better time. The tournament generates 100 million dollars in economic impact in a month where tourism numbers are fairly low.
“Most schools are back in around early August, so August is not the typically strong vacation month it used to be, so the FedEx St. Jude Championship is a God sent to us,” Kane said.
While the leaderboard keeps shifting, one thing is clear: the FedEx St. Jude Championship is a champion for Memphis. From cash registers to community impact, it’s a win on every level.
