Dr. Ziad Bahaa El-Din, former Deputy Prime Minister and prominent economist, emphasized the necessity for Egypt to establish a long-term economic program. Such a program would allow the country to address crises and challenges effectively, even if it requires certain interventions or adjustments. Speaking on the show “Evening dmc” hosted by Osama Kamal, Bahaa El-Din highlighted a persistent issue over the past 60 to 70 years: the role of the state in the economy. He noted that the last decade has seen an increased state involvement in the economy, diverging from the natural progression observed previously. This matter, he argued, needs to be tackled with seriousness and depth.
Bahaa El-Din pointed out that the state cannot handle everything in the economy, nor can its role be entirely dismissed. A balanced approach is needed, where the state plays a key role in strategic sectors such as military, developmental projects, and large infrastructure initiatives that benefit the private sector. Projects in remote areas, which are typically unattractive to private investors, should also fall under state responsibility. He warned against the prevalent notion of competition between the state and the private sector, stressing that their relationship should be based on mutual benefit rather than mere cooperation.
