Apple Issues ‘Emergency’ Warning to Encrypt iCloud Data

Apple is facing pressure from the UK government to add a backdoor to iCloud, allowing access to all iPhone and iPad content backed up to iCloud, whether end-to-end encrypted or not. According to reports, Apple is not allowed to inform users about this change. EFF warns that the demand for Apple to break encryption is an emergency for everyone.

Apple’s Advanced Data Protection (ADP) applies end-to-end encryption to almost all sensitive data on iPhones, including iCloud Drive, photos, and messaging. Users can enable ADP by ensuring their Apple Account has 2FA enabled, setting a passcode or password on all devices, and having an account recovery contact or recovery key.

To enable ADP on iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud, scroll down to Advanced Data Protection, and follow the onscreen instructions. On Mac, choose Apple menu > System Settings, click your name, then iCloud, click Advanced Data Protection, and follow the instructions.
